For most of history, careers were short enough that these questions never really came up. Education, work, retirement – that was the arc.
That’s no longer the reality most professionals are living.
Careers now span four decades or more. People are healthier, more capable and more ambitious at 50 than any previous generation, and far less willing to spend the second half of their working life going through the motions.
But wanting more isn’t the same as knowing how to get there.
Midlife is often the point where professionals have the most to offer and the least clarity about what they actually want.
Research consistently shows a dip in life satisfaction during these years. This dip doesn’t happen because things are bad, but because the old map has run out and no one handed them a new one.
