Talent doesn't quit. Identity does.

Why experienced professionals lose motivation at work

As a keynote speaker on mid-career disengagement and employee retention, I work with HR leaders, executive teams and leadership conferences across Belgium and Europe who want to understand what’s actually driving experienced people to check out.

Talent doesn't quit. Identity does.

Most organisations have a retention problem they’re misdiagnosing.

High performers plateau. Experienced people withdraw. Eventually they leave, or worse: they stay and start coasting.

The standard response is to look at engagement scores, compensation or management style. But that’s usually not where the problem is.

When a professional evolves and their role doesn’t, a gap opens up between who they’ve become and what their work still asks of them. As a result, motivation dips and the knowledge, judgment and relationships that took twenty years to build start walking out the door.

There’s a name for this: midlife identity drift.

It’s one of the most overlooked drivers of mid-career disengagement and once you know what to look for, you start seeing it everywhere.

In this keynote I introduce the concept, explain why it accelerates in the second half of a career, and show what leaders and HR teams can do about it before it becomes a problem they’re explaining to the board.

Goals of this keynote

To give leaders and HR teams a sharper way of thinking about mid-career motivation. One that goes beyond engagement surveys and performance frameworks.

Participants leave knowing what midlife identity drift is, how to spot it early, and what a realistic response looks like in practice.
